Stejnar is trained as a gold and silversmith. In the 1950s and early 1960s he designed various hanging, ceiling and wall lamps for the Viennese lighting manufacturer Rupert Nikoll. He also designed mirrors decorated with crystal glass flowers. He often felt as if his lights were like star explosions. His most famous object is the Sputnik lamp, also called the Dandelion or Snowball lamp. With his design, he inspired other Space Age designers to create their own futuristic lamps. His work belongs to the mid-century modern style.
